To avoid contamination of soil, landslides, and unpleasant odors in the living area of the monastery and its neighbors, this project will re-route all rain water and overflow from bathroom and kitchen waste water to a safe area outside. Cost: $20,000
Drinking Water
Natural springs are the only source of water at the monastery, the nunnery and their neighbors. Over the years, these springs have been polluted due to lack of protection, misuse, and improper maintenance. Many people have become ill from drinking contaminated water.
This project involves cleaning the springs and covering them with a proper structure so that no one can contaminate the water. A large water tank will be placed 15 feet from each spring for general use and fresh spring water will be piped directly from uncontaminated natural springs. Cost for monastery water project: $ 8,150 Cost for nunnery water project: $ 6,350
Emergency Fund
Located in the province of Himachal Pradesh in the foothills of the Himalayas, Menri Monastery is vulnerable to destruction resulting from monsoons and other natural disasters. Although great care is taken to construct solid structures on the monastery campus, buildings can be subject to damage resulting from landslides.
Funding is urgently needed to replace construction equipment to address these accidents of nature. Cost: All contributions welcome
Environmental Project
Two major areas of environmental focus are garbage and trash recycling and removal, and tree planting to prevent landslides. Please help to supply the area in and around the monastery with trash bins so that garbage can be collected and burned in an on-site facility. The trash bins are made of heavy gauge metal quality and are designed and installed for permanence and durability.
Trees are needed to secure the loose dirt and dust on the hillsides that often result in serious landslides. Please buy as many trees or trash bins as you can afford! Cost of trash bins: $50 each (40 trash bins are needed); Cost of trees (including labor) $3.00 per tree (1,500 trees are needed) If you would like to discuss any of these projects feel free to contact us at boninfo@bonfoundation.org.
